Frequently Asked Questions
How do you select testers?
I put out a testing call over my newsletter first, which you can subscribe to on this page! I give priority to newsletter subscribers when I am looking for new testers, and then I put out testing calls over social media- Instagram, Tiktok, and Youtube. I send a google form that asks you about your knitting experience/etc, as many of my patterns are not very beginner friendly and I want to make sure that this is a good experience for both of us!
I am a total beginner…what do I need to know to knit your patterns?
It’s great that you’re learning something new! Congrats! And I am honored that you are choosing one of my patterns to work with. In order to succeed in making one of these patterns your own, I would recommend learning each stitch and its symbol in the pattern charts (such as k, p, k2tog, ssk, m1L, m1R). Then, based on the sweater construction, check out some videos on Youtube- if you are looking at the Ants in a Row, I would highly recommend checking out some raglan increase videos. Coming January 2025 I will be providing some links in my patterns for my own Youtube videos explaining the ins and outs of how I constructed the designs.
Do you design for crochet?
Not at the moment! My charts are applicable for crocheting, and if you want to try and crochet one of my patterns go for it- I only ask that if you write the pattern for yourself based off one of my designs, that you do not share it with others.
I emailed you!!! Why aren’t you responding?
I am a full time Ph.D. student! The email associated with this account is meredithjunewillmott@gmail.com, and I check it and respond to people on Sundays, so there is the possibility that it takes me a full week to respond to your email. If you are able to resolve the issue yourself in that time, please let me know, so that I don’t give you extraneous information.
What do you study?
I am an entomologist, interested in the evolution and maintenance of species interactions, specifically mutualisms. Primarily, I try and work on treehoppers/leafhoppers and ants, but I am also interested in ant/aphid interactions. One of my current fascinations is with phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of functional traits!
What should I do if I want to get into bugs?
Look at the dirt for a really long time. I’m serious! Or a tree. Anywhere there’s bugs really. I highly recommend using sites like iNaturalist and Bugguide. If you’re in university, check out the Entomological Society of America, and see if there’s a chapter that holds meetings in your region.
Good Books: The Insect Epiphany, Barrett Klein. Bugs in the System, May Berenbaum. Dr. Tatiana’s Sex Guide to All Creation, Olivia Judson. The Diversity of Life, E.O. Wilson. Guests of Ants, Bert Hölldobler and Christina L. Kwapich.
I am always available to answer questions and give advice to undergraduate and new graduate students! Please reach out if there is anything you think I could help with in terms of the whole graduate student experience.
